Silesian Zoological Garden

historia2Established between 1954 and 1958, the Silesia ZOO happens to be one of the youngest in Poland. It is also one of the largest in terms of area and number of residents from almost all continents. Set on 48 hectares, the Silesia ZOO is home of more than 2200 animals representing about 280 species.

The extraordinary Valley of the Dinosaurs was opened within the ZOO area in 1975 and features life-sized figures of the creatures that roamed the Earth millions years ago. It is the only dispaly of this kind in Poland. The youngest visitor's favourite is the Mini ZOO, where children enjoy the opportunity to feed and hug some small, safe and gentle animals. There are also two interesting pieces of architecture you should admire while visiting the ZOO.

The sandstone huge gate adorning ZOO's main entrance dates back to the 19th century and was transfered to the park in 1960. The gate was refurbished following an almost-complete destruction during WWII at it's original location in the Donnersmarck Palace 25 km from the ZOO. Architecture fans should also have a look at the unique design of the large aviary built in 1969. The annual attendance to Silesia ZOO exceeds 400 000 visitors.
